A Community Milestone: Opening of Hiland Suites at Bay Bluffs

Aug 20, 2024

On Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the greater Emmet County community will gather to celebrate the grand opening of Hiland Suites at Bay Bluffs – Emmet County Medical Care Facility. This event marks a significant achievement in the journey to provide high-quality end-of-life care within Emmet County, thanks to the tireless efforts of Friends of Hospice of Little Traverse Bay and overwhelming support from the community.

A Community-Driven Vision

“The Hiland Suites project is more than just a collaboration between Bay Bluffs and Friends of Hospice of Little Traverse Bay,” shares David McBride, Friends of Hospice of Little Traverse Bay member. “It’s a reflection of the community’s spirit.”

Since its inception, this project has received an outpouring of support in the form of donations, volunteer hours, and shared talents. Local interior designer Jodi Miller, for example, has brought her expertise to create calming and welcoming environments, while artists from the region have donated their work to add a personal and comforting touch.

Bay Bluffs Administrator Lisa Ashley expresses her gratitude for the community’s involvement: “We’ve seen our neighbors come together in remarkable ways, sharing their time, talents and resources to ensure these suites provide the peace and dignity that every individual deserves at the end of life.”

A Legacy Continued

The Hiland Suites stand as a tribute to the legacy of Hiland Cottage, which, until its closure in March 2023, provided exceptional inpatient hospice care. Inspired by the dedication of Hiland Hall, for whom the suites are named, this project continues his mission of ensuring that no one in the community faces the end of life alone.

With three suites initially available, each designed with private family areas and serene views, the project is poised for future growth. The goal is to expand to up to 11 suites as community needs and financial support allow.

McBride shares his excitement: “It’s inspiring to see the community rally behind this project. Hiland Suites will not only continue the legacy of compassionate care started at Hiland Cottage but also ensure that our loved ones can receive the care they deserve close to home.”

Celebrate with Us

The grand opening celebration on September 4th will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 pm, followed by guided tours of the new Hiland Suites from 3:15 to 5:45 pm. Light refreshments will be provided, and the entire community is invited to join in the celebration of this remarkable milestone.
