Bay Bluffs Celebrates Two Medication Aide Certification Graduates

Mar 4, 2025

HARBOR SPRINGS, MI | March 2025 — Bay Bluffs – Emmet County Medical Care Facility is proud to celebrate the success of two dedicated team members, Dawn Weston and Keisha Tompkins, who have completed the Medication Aide Certification training program. As the top two students in their class, their achievement marks a significant milestone for both their careers and the future of healthcare at Bay Bluffs.

The Medication Aide Certification program, a first-of-its-kind initiative in Michigan, was launched to address the ongoing healthcare workforce shortage. This program empowers Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) to expand their skill set, enabling them to administer medications safely and efficiently while easing the burden on nursing staff.

Dawn Weston has been a dedicated night shift CNA at Bay Bluffs since 2018, providing compassionate care and support to residents. Keisha Tompkins, who joined Bay Bluffs in 2019, has most recently served as a Bath Aide for long-term care residents, ensuring their comfort and well-being. Both individuals have demonstrated exceptional commitment and aptitude, excelling in their training and ranking at the top of their class.

Having successfully completed the training program, Dawn and Keisha will now sit for the state certification exam. Once certified, they will play a pivotal role in integrating the Medication Aide position into Bay Bluffs’ daily operations. Their contributions will not only enhance resident care but also support nursing leaders in developing the scope and responsibilities of this new role.

The Bay Bluffs and North Central Michigan College (NCMC) partnership, lead the way for the certification program, offering the first classes in Michigan in September/October of 2024.

“Bay Bluffs is thrilled to be at the forefront of this innovative healthcare solution,” shares said Lisa Ashley, MSW, LNHA, Bay Bluffs Administrator. “Dawn and Keisha’s dedication to advancing their skills is inspiring. And, their success reflects the immense potential of this program to strengthen our healthcare workforce and improve patient care.”

The Medication Aide Certification program has already received widespread recognition for its impact on long-term care facilities across Michigan. By providing CNAs with the opportunity to expand their roles, the initiative helps address staffing challenges while ensuring high-quality, resident-centered care.

Bay Bluffs congratulates Dawn Weston and Keisha Tompkins on their outstanding achievement and looks forward to their continued contributions to the facility and its residents.
