The Next Steps

The Emmet County Board of Commissioners met on Monday July 8, and meet again on Thursday July 18, to continue critical discussions regarding annual and capital budgets. While a ballot proposal has been developed to support the needs of our local emergency ambulance services, the Commission took no action related to Bay Bluffs privatization, or millage for capital support.

The County Administrator encouraged the Commission to allow the Leadership Team and Board at Bay Bluffs to continue exploring alternatives that might create a self-sufficient operating model. The Commissioners supported this recommendation which means that beginning with our 2020 budget, Bay Bluffs will look at ways to generate revenue such that we can provide for our own capital expenses and possibly even repay the County for capital loans in the future.

This is NOT a process that will occur overnight. It is the proverbial "marathon, not a sprint".Bay Bluffs has maintained a positive cash flow and cash balance over the last four years as we have invested in our facility infrastructure, created competitive wage scales for all positions, and replaced outdated or worn equipment. The move toward being fully self-sufficient requires us to develop a multi-year plan and set targets for both quality of care and financial metrics. There is no sense having a self-sustaining financial model if it is not producing the 5 star quality care we expect!

Our community has expressed their support for the county medical care facility through tremendous engagement in recent Commission meetings, letters, emails and calls. At this time, the County is NOT pursuing privatization of Bay Bluffs, however, the Commissioners still need to hear from constituents regarding the importance of Bay Bluffs as a community resource. It is not the norm for a County government to own a medical care facility. It is the expectation, though, that the County provide services that meet resident needs.Commissioners represent the interests of their constituents and make decisions with your feedback in mind.As the County website states – "Quality of life is everything".If you believe an important aspect of local quality of life includes caring for and serving our vulnerable seniors, then keep sharing and telling the Bay Bluffs story. Our team will continue to work hard to earn your trust and support by being the very best stewards of our resources we possible can be.

Collectively, we are in control of Bay Bluff's destiny.
