For six decades, Bay Bluffs–Emmet County Medical Care Facility has been a place where care goes beyond meeting needs. It’s about creating connection, dignity and a true sense of home.
As we mark our 60th anniversary during National Long-Term Care Week (May 10 – 16, 2026), we reflect on the people, purpose and community that have shaped Bay Bluffs into what it is today.
Since opening our doors, Bay Bluffs has remained grounded in a simple but powerful mission: to provide high-quality, compassionate care for those who call our community home. Over the years, that commitment has evolved alongside changing needs, advancements in healthcare and community needs.
From long-term care, skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation to memory care and end-of-life services, Bay Bluffs has continued to expand and enhance its offerings, always with a focus on dignity, comfort and respect.
The People Who Make the Difference
“At the heart of Bay Bluffs are the people,” shares Administrator Lisa Ashley. “It’s about those who show up each day with dedication and heart. National Long-Term Care Week gives us a special opportunity to recognize these individuals: the nurses, aides, therapists, dietary staff, housekeepers, administrative team and so many others whose work often happens quietly but leaves a lasting impact.”
Their commitment is what transforms care into connection. It’s the familiar face, the extra moment of patience, the shared laugh and the understanding that every resident matters.
“Throughout the week, we are proud to celebrate our staff and all they do to make Bay Bluffs a trusted and compassionate place for care,” Ashley adds.<
Honoring the Past While Looking Ahead
Reaching 60 years is not something accomplished alone. Bay Bluffs has been shaped by generations of families, community partners and supporters who have placed their trust in us. Whether through advocacy or simply being present for loved ones, the community has always been an essential part of the Bay Bluffs story. That spirit of partnership continues today, ensuring that Bay Bluffs remains a vital resource for Emmet County.
While this milestone is an opportunity to reflect, it is also a moment to look forward. Bay Bluffs remains committed to evolving with the needs of our community.
“The addition of Hiland Suites is a perfect example of our growth mindset,” Ashley explains. “A collaborative effort and a passionate community made this end-of-life neighborhood possible.”
That same focus on meeting needs continues to guide what comes next. Current efforts, including the Raise the Garden initiative, reflect a growing understanding of the importance of outdoor access in long-term care. Nature-based environments encourage movement, boost mood, reduce feelings of isolation, and improve overall well-being, especially for older adults and those living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
“As we celebrate 60 years of care, we do so with gratitude for the past and a renewed focus on the future,” Ashley concludes.

As part of National Long-Term Care Week, we invite the community to celebrate this milestone with us at a special anniversary event:

Enjoy a festive afternoon featuring music therapy, a giant anniversary cake, ice cream truck treats and a ceremonial anniversary banner presentation in partnership with the Harbor Springs and Petoskey Chambers.
While our staff will be recognized throughout the week, this event is an opportunity to celebrate together with residents, families and the community that has supported Bay Bluffs for 60 years.
“This therapy goes beyond resident outcomes and links us all to music that we know and love,” adds Johnston. “And, a happy workplace also makes for happy employees, which strengthens our already strong employee retention record.”
Remedies in Rhythm programs at Bay Bluffs were made possible through a grant from the Petoskey–Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation from January through June. Following the program’s success and strong resident engagement, the Bay Bluffs Foundation has stepped forward to support an additional six months of programming. “Donations have made this program possible, and we are grateful to all who support nursing home care,” Ashley adds.
