Bay Bluffs – Emmet County Medical Care Facility is celebrating an important professional milestone for one of its longtime leaders. On March 27, Director of Nursing Sonja Bosley completed her Master’s Degree in Nursing with a focus on Education through the American College of Education, marking the culmination of years of dedication.

Sonja has served as Director of Nursing at Bay Bluffs for the past 11 years, guiding the nursing team with a focus on quality care, mentorship and professional growth. She began her career at Bay Bluffs in 2013 as a per diem nurse working on the floor and stepped into the Director of Nursing role after briefly filling in as interim Administrator.
With assistance from a workforce grant provided by the Michigan County Medical Care Facility Council (MCMCFC), Sonja’s master’s program started during one of the most challenging periods in healthcare: the COVID-19 pandemic. While helping lead the Bay Bluffs team through the demands of the pandemic, she also committed herself to advancing her education in order to better support the nursing profession.
“Obtaining a master’s degree in nursing is not just a personal milestone, it is a commitment to the nursing profession” shares Sonja.“My goal is to use this advanced education to build a more sustainable, supported and empowering nursing workforce.”
Her path to nursing has been shaped by a commitment to caring for others and lifelong learning. She began her career in Grand Rapids as a recreational therapist before deciding to return to college to pursue nursing. She earned her nursing degree from North Central Michigan College (NCMC) and has continued to build on that foundation, where Sonja now teaches NCMC nursing courses including FastTrack Medication Aide and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification programs.
With her master’s degree focused on nursing education, Sonja hopes to further strengthen collaboration between Bay Bluffs and North Central Michigan College while expanding her role as a nursing educator.
“With such a need for healthcare workers in our region and throughout the country, I look forward to supporting growth throughout the nursing profession, especially at Bay Bluffs where caregivers can build meaningful and lasting careers,” Sonja adds.
